This morning was our second day using our family liturgy for Advent. When we were about to gather early, J called my attention to the beautiful purple sunrise. Bud rushed to look, and exclaimed, "Dad, I think God did that on purpose for the second day of Advent!"
Our family liturgy is something that J planned out, pulling from a variety of sources, including the Book of Common Prayer. He was also responsible for compiling our Advent playlist on the iPod. Having an Easter playlist last year was one of my favorite things about the season; I still pull it out from time to time. And I'm glad we'll have one for Advent, as well.
It really opened up our musical choices to think of Advent as a time to look forward to the King's return, and not just the baby coming to a manger!
Anyway, the structure of our times will remain constant over the next four weeks, although the content will shift slightly. Here's what we're doing in the morning this week.
We pray together:
"Almighty God, give us grace to cast away the works of darkness, and put on the armor of light, now in the time of this mortal life in which your Son Jesus Christ came to visit us in great humility; that in the last day, when he shall come again in his glorious majesty to judge both the living and the dead, we may rise to the life immortal; through him who reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever." Amen.
We work on our memory verses for this week (reciting it together twice):
"Behold, I am coming soon! My reward is with me, and I will give to everyone according to what he has done. I am the Alpha and the Omega, the First and the Last, the Beginning and the End." Revelation 22:12-13
And we bid each other farewell:
"Let us go forth in peace, to love and serve the Lord!"

Next time I'll either share what we do in the evenings or another of our morning Advent traditions. It involves an Elf.

We have been using your Advent liturgy and really enjoying it! Thank you for sharing. Our family has been excessively entertained by the tenor line in Come Thou Long Expected Jesus. In our hymnal, Jonathan rarely gets away from a C, and we were laughing so hard we couldn't sing. The kids couldn't figure out what was so funny. We are enjoying sharing in your advent celebration. We do it all in the evening, though.
